Welcome to the official website of the campaign to elect Ron St.
John to represent California’s 46th Congressional District.  This
campaign is necessary to help clarify the Republican position
on immigration, to send a message about how new immigrants
fit in with the Republican Party, and to give all the voters a
chance at having a representative who can represent all of the
people of this District.

Consider the following quotes from responsible, common-
sense Republicans on the immigration issue:

“ I have thought of America as a place in the divine scheme
of things that was set aside as a promised land . . . and the
price of admission was very simple . . . any person with the
courage, with the desire to tear up their roots, to strive for
freedom, to attempt and dare to live in a strange and foreign
place, to travel halfway across the world was welcome
here.”

-  Ronald Reagan (1979)

“We need comprehensive, fundamental change in our
immigration system -- not just more small band-aid fixes that
create more problems than they solve. . . . Immigrants built
this country, and immigrants will rebuild it. Immigrants bring
with them a tremendous work ethic and a great appreciation
for freedom and opportunity.”

                                      - U. S. Chamber of Commerce (2002)

“Turning the GOP into an anti-immigration party could dash
Republican hopes of becoming a long-term governing
party.”

- William Kristol, Weekly Standard (2006)

These are the voices of responsible, common-sense
conservatives.  They recognize the value that immigrants bring
to our economy, and work for legal reform that is humane,
economically sensible, and just.  By contrast,
Dana
Rohrabacher, our current representative in Congress actually
made the following statement in Congress as part of what was
supposed to be a serious debate:
 “Let the prisoners pick the
fruits.  We can do without bringing in millions of foreigners.”

Yes, there were problems with the recent immigration
proposals.  Comprehensive reform should include a no-
amnesty provision, and there should be no special benefit for
having broken the law in the past.  But Congressman
Rohrabacher’s offensive suggestion of prison labor and his
derogatory reference to foreigners was an embarrassment to
us as his constituents, and to the whole Republican Party.  This
quote was not an isolated incident, it is typical of many
statements that Congressman Rohrbacher has made.  We
deserve better.  We deserve a representative who understands
that immigrants who come here to work are not hurting us.
